Saawan

Saawan
In the month of Saawan
Misty all around, how to survive beloved mother of mine,
The dark night
With drizzling outside and brimful memories of thine.

Beyond mountains heavy roar of clouds
Ruthlessly it starts raining
Baaduli I do have
In the month of Saawan

The rills and mountains make boisterous sound
You at alien land and lonely I at home
My heart dreads
In the month of Saawan

Children at home, work remains undone in fields
Pathetically it rains and I need to collect grass too
Uptight my clothes are
In the month of Saawan

Alone I am with delicate heart of mine
This entire monsoon tears enough
From my eyes would flow
In the month of Saawan
Gone the days of heavy rains
Gone the monsoon but my eyes remains wet
How they’ll get dry
In the month of Saawan

Himalayan Symphony

"Himalayan Symphony: Songs and Poems of Narendra Singh Negi" is a book consisting of the English translation of the major songster and poet of Uttarakhand Himalayas Sri Narendra Singh Negi.  His expression has been inclusive of all the vivid colours of hill life. This book is a series of an earlier book "A Stream of Himalayan Melody: Selected songs of Narendra Singh Negi" which has been readily accepted by readers nationwide. This series envelops his poems and songs of great artistic value.  Foreword If ever one were to draw a map of popularity of individuals in the central Himalayas Shree Narendra Singh Negi would occupy the highest standing bar. It will be a gross mistake if one evaluated Negi just for the poignant songs he has written, sung and composed. He stands atop and beyond them all – A towering Adam-sized human being. His universal popularity and presence is bewildering. He is everywhere:  In Uttarakhand agitation, taking out “prabhat pheris” i...

Transcending Borders

Transcending Borders   Narendra Singh Negi and the Ethos of Romanticism Narendra Singh Negi, a poetic voice resonating through the gorgeous valleys of the Uttarakhand Himalayas, exemplifies the Romantic sensibility in a manner that transcends mere physical landscapes. His songs and poems, much like the European Romantics and American Transcendentalists, echo a longing for transcendence; an existential wish to connect profoundly with nature, humanity, and the cosmos. What sets Negi apart is his use of the vernacular tongue, drawing from the everyday life of shepherds, grass reapers, and villagers, blending the simplicity of the life of hill folk with the profound depth of Romantic thought. Negi’s songs and poems, akin to the poetic expressions of Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Keats, and Robert Frost, reflect an unfathomable reverence for nature. His lyrics whole-heartedly celebrate the feelings of love with a deep exploration of the human condition. Yet, h...
